The Indianola softball team went 3-0 at a tournament in Des Moines Saturday, taking down Des Moines Lincoln 6-2, WDM Valley 5-4 in a 13 inning classic, and Boone 8-7 to end the day.
The Indians scored four runs against Lincoln in the second inning off of RBI hits from Kyra Robins and Mara Bishop in addition to taking advantage of Railsplitter errors, then added another in the fourth off of a Bishop double and a sacrifice fly from Kiley Kindelspire, and another in the fifth off of an RBI hit from Hanna Graham.
Against Valley, neither team scored until the third inning when Bishop again drove in another run, and that was nearly the winning margin but Valley tied it up in the bottom of the seventh to force extras. The Indians scored a run in the eighth on a Kindelspire double, only to see Valley equalize in the bottom of the inning. Both teams then scored a run in each of the 9th and 10th innings, with a Selia Becker double and a Jordyn Gripp single, and finally the Indians scored the winning run in the 12th on an error.
The drama was not done for the day however, as Boone scored a run in the first inning to take an early lead, only to see the Indians score on a passed ball and an error in the bottom of the inning to lead 2-1. Boone would score the next four runs to lead 5-2 going into the bottom of the third when Izzy Sloan drove a run in with a double followed by a Becker single to get back within a run. The Indians tied the score in the fifth off of an Izzie Benge single, but would fall behind once again in the seventh when the Toreadors pushed across a pair of runs to lead 7-5 heading into the final inning. Kindelspire and Ava Tichy drove in runs to tie the score, and Sloan hit a walk-off single to end the day and earn the win.
Indianola is now 5-4 on the season, and head to Grinnell on Monday, joined by the Indians baseball team. The baseball game will be broadcast live on 94.3 KNIA, with Andrew Swadner on the play-by-play. Pregame coverage begins at approximately 7:15.
