The Knoxville School Board at their May 23 meeting passed a motion to establish a Ken Locke Stadium Preservation Committee. The committee would have representation from several area groups, including the Knoxville School District, the City of Knoxville, SOS/Alumni Association, and the Marion County Historical Society. The Marion County Historical Society board held a vote and Historical Society President Craig Agan spoke with KNIA/KRLS News about their stance on this issue.
“The Marion County Historical Society supports the preservation of Ken Locke Stadium but rejects the idea of the Superintendent’s committee and voted to respectfully decline an invitation to the committee. We feel there isn’t a need for a committee on this issue.”
Agan says that the Historical Society would be willing to help with the stadium issue.
“The Historical Society has not said that they would not help in regards to Ken Locke Stadium if the school board were to come out and make a statement saying they need help. They have stepped up with Save Our Stadium from what I have been told, and have raised around $800,000 to go in and do upgrades to the stadium. That would put the school board in the right position to move forward and preserve the stadium.”
The Ken Locke Preservation Committee has not officially said when they will meet to start discussions on Ken Locke Stadium.
