For residents who have not paid their property taxes, the deadline to take care of those taxes is approaching. Marion County Treasurer Michaela Bigaouette spoke with KNIA/KRLS News about the upcoming deadline.

“It’s crunch time as we have the annual tax sale coming up on Monday 20 and the sale will happen online. It is really important for residents to come in and pay their taxes before that time. We will only accept guaranteed funds, which are cash, money order, certified checks, etc. We will accept payments online or in our office till Friday, June 17. If your taxes are not paid by that date, they will go to the tax sale.”

If your taxes do go to the tax sale, Bigouette answers the question she gets the most from residents about the process.

“A lot of people believe that if their taxes go to the tax sale that they have lost their property and that causes a lot of stress.  You will not lose your property if your taxes go to the sale. What happens is Iowa law allows private investors to bid on taxes at the sale. What that also does is increase the monthly interest rate by 2 percent each month and a $20 certificate fee. So you can imagine how fast that can add up.”
