The Class 2A #9 ranked Pella Christian softball team wrapped up a rough week Friday as they were swept in a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader at Oskaloosa, falling 12-1 in game one and 4-0 in the second game that was heard live on 92.1 KRLS. The baseball doubleheader between the Eagles and Indians scheduled for Friday night was called off due to unplayable field conditions from the rain throughout the week.
In the opening game of the softball doubleheader, Emri Agre scored the lone Eagles run in the top of the first inning after she doubled, advanced on a sac bunt, and then scored on a Natalie Harrill single. The Indians would dominate from there, scoring four times in the first and third innings, once in the second frame, and three times in the fourth to down Pella Christian via the run rule in the fifth inning.
Game two of the doubleheader was dominated by the pitching and defense early, as neither team cracked the scoreboard through the first three innings. Oskaloosa would break the scoreless tie in the fourth inning with three runs, followed by their final run of the night in the fifth inning. Down by four runs in the top of the sixth, the Eagles had the makings of a comeback set up. Amaia Agre led off the inning with a bunt single, followed by an Emri Agre walk to set up the heart of the P.C. lineup with a chance to cut into the lead, but three consecutive flyouts would end the scoring threat and the Indians complete the sweep recording the final three outs on six-pitches. Despite a disappointing week, Pella Christian Head Coach Karen Harrill acknowledged that it’s a long season and that the squad needs to clean up a few aspects of their game to turn things around.
“The season’s not over tonight. We get to play again, and we get the opportunity next week to come back and play a couple games. And we still need to hit better. We just didn’t hit consistently. We had one or two hits here and there, but we could never back them up. So, if you have four or five hits in a row, you’re gonna score at least one if not two. So, we just didn’t do that, and the score showed that.”
Pella Christian’s record dropped to 5-11 overall and 1-8 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. Both the Eagles baseball and softball squads will be back in action and looking to snap their losing streaks on Monday as they make the short trip across town for the Tulip City Showdown against Pella.
