The Indianola baseball team split with Warren County rival Norwalk on the road Wednesday evening, winning 8-5 in 9 innings in game one and falling 4-2 in game two.
The Indians struck first in game one, scoring a lone run in the third on a Bennett Brueck RBI single, but that lead would not hold for long as the Warriors scored three in the fourth that included a Jackson Campbell RBI hit to put them up 3-1.
Indianola then battled back, scoring four in the sixth with an Ethan Grimsrud RBI single and a bases clearing double by Kasey Carter to take a 5-3 lead, only to see the Warriors again answer with two in the bottom of the inning to tie it with an RBI hit from DJ Harris. Neither team scored again until the ninth when the Indians plated three with RBI hits from Casey Stecker and Brueck to earn the win. Vinnie Mauro struck out 11 in a losing effort, and Norwalk pitchers struck out 17 Indianola batters.
Game two was all Norwalk, as they took a 4-0 lead in the third with a bases-clearing double by Keefer Saddoris, and they didn’t look back. Indianola scored two in the fifth with hits from Luke Rockhold and Carter, but that would be all they could muster. Warriors pitchers Ian Fisher and CJ Davis combined to strike out another 9 Indianola hitters.
Indianola head coach Jon Fitzpatrick tells KNIA Sports the Warriors pitchers are some of the most talented in the state, and he was happy with the way they were able to get some runs against them despite falling in game two.
Indianola is now 21-12, while Norwalk is 17-17. Indianola will host Pella tomorrow for senior night, while the Warriors host Carlisle tomorrow.
