The #7 Indianola softball team celebrated their senior class of eight Thursday evening, defeating Pella 6-2 in a game heard live on KNIA and KRLS.
Indianola jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a Jordyn Gripp two-RBI double in the first inning, and Pella would answer in the third on an Ava Curry RBI single to cut the deficit in half.
The Indians then scored five unanswered runs, two in the fourth on a two-run home run by Mara Bishop, an RBI single by Izzy Sloan plated a run in the fifth, and on a fielder’s choice in the sixth to lead 6-1. Pella did not go away without a fight however, getting the bases loaded with nobody out in the seventh, but a strikeout, and a double-play on a sacrifice fly ended the game.
Indianola team captain Selia Becker said the trio of captains including her, Hanna Graham, and Mara Bishop, have embraced their roles as leaders and are emulating the captains of the past in the storied program.
“I feel like it’s definitely a different role for us, but we’ve had some big leadership roles above us that we got to learn from. I think we’ve all learned together about how to make the team better. There have been some difficulties we’ve been through, but we learned how to push through those working as captains. It’s nice to know someone has your back and is working to make the team better as a whole.”
Ava Curry led Pella with a 3-3 night at the plate with a run batted in, while Bishop went 3-3 with a pair of runs batted in. Pella falls to 12-21 on the season, and will next host Perry on Tuesday in their regular season finale. Indianola improves to 23-11 and plays in the Fillie Invitational at Dallas Center-Grimes today.
Indianola and Pella baseball match up on the diamond tonight. The game will be heard live on KNIA and KRLS, with pregame beginning at approximately 7pm.
