The U.S. Census Bureau and Iowa Data Center have released the first population estimates since the 2020 census was completed.
Marion County has declined slightly in residents since the once-a-decade count, losing 34 based on the formula, which is 0.1% less from April 2020 to July 1st, 2021. With 33,380 people, that makes Marion County the 21st largest in the state.
According to the estimate, Pella has grown by 174 residents (10,554), while Knoxville has lost 132 (7,472). The rest of the county, including all other communities, saw small losses.
The formula is based on reported births, deaths, domestic migration, international migration, and those moving out of the county.
Warren County continued growth shown in the census, as the latest resident count grew by 999, the 4th largest based on people in Iowa behind Polk, Dallas, and Johnson and 2nd most based on percentage (1.9%) behind Dallas. Warren County’s population of 53,402 is the 11th most statewide. The growth is mostly driven by those moving into the county from other places (+993), mainly in Norwalk (+767). Indianola grew slightly (+79) to 15,747 residents.
Overall, the State of Iowa grew by an estimated 0.8%, or 2,710 people, which is 26th in the country based on growth of individuals and 28th by percentage. In total, 3,193,079 residents live in the Hawkeye State. The United States grew by an estimated 444,464 residents from 2020 to 2021.
