The Norwalk Warrior baseball team fell to the Des Moines Roosevelt Roughriders 3-2 Friday, in the Class 4A, Substate 8 first round. Coming into the matchup both teams knew Friday’s game could be a close one as Norwalk Ace Ian Fisher and Roosevelt Ace Shea Stickel both had era’s around hovering around 1, and both teams had battled in tight games in their two previous matchups including a 1 run 11 inning duel back in May

Des Moines Roosevelt would get the scoring started right away after a throwing error in the bottom of the first would allow a runner to advance and later be batted in on fielder’s choice giving the Roughriders a 1-0 lead.

The game remained a 1-0 Roosevelt lead until the Warrior’s Tucker Beving would double to lead off the top of the 6th inning and would later score following a Vinny Mauro RBI single tying the game up at 1-1.

The game would advance into extra innings as both teams showed dominance on the mound. Norwalk’s DJ Harris would walk to get on base in the top of the 9th which set up a Jackson Campbell RBI single to give the Warriors their first lead 2-1.

With Norwalk on the cusp of advancing, Des Moines Roosevelt would get a lead off single in the bottom of the 9th that would be followed up by a Norwalk fielding error to allow the Roughriders to get runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Roosevelt’s Sonny Hermann would then come up clutch with the game winning RBI single.

The loss ends the season for the Warriors who finish with an overall record of 18-18.

The Norwalk High School softball team will hope for better luck in their Class 4A Region 6 opening round matchup as they host Cedar Rapids Xavier tonight at 7 p.m. Xavier took down the Newton Cardinals 1-0 on Thursday to set up the matchup with the Warriors.
