In just under six weeks, Pella voters will have the option to extend a one-cent sales tax that generates millions of dollars of revenue for the community and the rest of Marion County.

Mayor Don DeWaard says the Local Option Sales and Service Tax is on the ballot for residents on Tuesday, September 13th, with a yes or no vote. DeWaard says over the past several years, the levy set to expire at the end of 2023 has been used to fund quality of life projects, infrastructure upgrades, and property tax offset relief.

DeWaard has made stops at various businesses and organizations throughout the community — including last week’s Pella Area Community and Economic Alliance membership breakfast, to discuss the extension. He says voter approval means a projected $35 million of revenue for a potential new Indoor Rec Center, renovation of the Pella Community Center, extension of University Street east, road reconstruction projects, and to continue to keep the property tax rate lower than if the one-cent tax were to stop existing.
