The Norwalk volleyball team opened the season in impressive fashion Tuesday night, sweeping a non-conference home match vs. Class 4A fifth-ranked Bondurant-Farrar by scores of 25-17, 25-13, 25-11.
The Warriors were not listed in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Week 1 rankings released Monday, but that could change based on Tuesday’s outcome. Norwalk won each set by a progressively wider margin and swept a Bluejay squad that won 32 games last fall and qualified for the 4A state tournament.
The Warriors averaged nearly 10 kills per set while totaling nine ace serves and eight blocks at the net.
Norwalk’s balanced kill attack included eight by junior outside hitter Noelle Sutcliffe, seven for junior Ava Johnson and four apiece by sophomore setter Elizabeth Iverson and junior Ava McKay. Iverson, who also set 23 assists, finished with a kill efficiency of .571 and McKay was 13-for-13 on attacks for a .308 kill efficiency.
Senior middle Sami Aagard tallied three kills and a team-high three blocks while Johnson and Sutcliffe both had two blocks. Dakota Poen was the dig leader with 16, followed by Grace Dehmer with nine, Iverson eight and Katie Larson five.
Dehmer served 10-for-10 with three aces, Poen and Larson each had two aces and Iverson put all 15 of her serve attempts in play.
The Warriors will return to action Thursday for three matches at the Southeast Polk Quad. Starting at 5:00 p.m., Norwalk will face the host Rams, followed by games against Des Moines Lincoln and Class 4A No. 14 Indianola.
The Norwalk boys golfers will compete today at the Johnston Dragon Invitational at Jester Park Golf Course. The 12-team meet starts at 9:00 a.m.
