New gym, new logo, new look team, but a similar result for Pella volleyball as they swept the season opener Tuesday night against Fairfield (25-8, 25-20, 25-18).
While the final two sets were closer than a surge in the opener, the Dutch only trailed at the beginning of set three and largely controlled all phases on the court. A strong service run in the first set keyed by five aces from newcomer Katie Scheckel and three service aces from veteran Katie Pollock allowed Pella to pull away, but when that advantage was erased, a balanced home-team offense largely handled the Fairfield defensive back row.
Senior Jasmine Namminga finished with 16 kills, and while she believes there is plenty to work on, it was satisfying to see a lot of off-season work turn into an opening victory.
“Tonight, we kind of showed that we are versatile, we’re very united as a team — we had a lot of positive energy going and we played very well together,” she says. “The younger girls who have never played varsity really stepped up and we’re super proud of the game that we put out there.”
Mia Warner added 14 kills for the Pella offensive attack. The Dutch volleyball team is 1-0 and next heads into the Bondurant-Farrar tournament Saturday.
