With schools back in session, the Indianola Police Department wants to remind drivers that school buses are transporting students around the area, and commuters should take extra care of their surroundings. Acting Chief Brian Sher tells KNIA News school bus safety may be common knowledge, but it can’t be repeated enough.
“If you are behind a school bus, at some point it is going to stop to let kids on or off, so the flashing lights are going to come on and the stop sign is going to come out. So please allow a greater following distance, that will allow you more time to stop once the lights and arm comes out. And a reminder, it is illegal in all 50 states, including Iowa, to pass a school bus that has stopped to unload or load children. We have no discretion on that.”
