The PCM Mustangs hung around but couldn’t quite pull off a win against the Newton Cardinals Friday night in Monroe. Newton topped the Mustangs in their home opener 27-13. The win by Newton put the Cardinals at 2-0 overall while the Mustangs fall to 1-1 for the season.
Newton had three touchdown passes for the night from 4, 43 and 35-yards. Capping the win for Newton was quarterback Brody Bauer with a two-yard dive into the end zone with 3:44 left.
The Mustangs had two touchdowns in the game. The first score came in the opening quarter when August Stock made his season debut in the lineup by hitting Gavin Fenton on an 11-yard score tie the game at 7-7.
The halftime score was 14-7 in favor of the Cardinals as Christian Ergenbright hauled in his second score of the game.
After taking a 20-7 lead, the Mustangs closed to within 20-13 with 7:07 left in the game when Stock bounced his way into the end zone on a fourth down run from the five.
PCM Coach Greg Bonnett was pleased how his team hung around and was impressed with Stock’s first night on the field in 2022.

Action doesn’t get any easier for PCM as they face the Pella Christian Eagles on the road next Friday evening.
