Ketchum Throws Four TD Passes in Central Football Opening Win
Some big-play strikes in quarterback Brady Ketchum’s starting debut carried Central College to a 44-13 season-opening win over St. Olaf College (Minn.) Saturday. It was the 18th consecutive regular-season victory for the Dutch, ranked No. 14 in the D3football.com preseason poll. Central completes its non-conference slate with another home game next Saturday against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 1 p.m. at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium. In the teams’ only previous meeting, the Blugolds were 28-21 winners in a first-round NCAA Division III playoff game at Pella. Wis.-Eau Claire got a 24-yard TD pass from Harry Roubidoux to Nicholas Kudick with 24 seconds left Saturday to rally at home past Loras College 30-27.
Early Tally Enough for Dutch Women’s Soccer Win
A goal in the first four minutes by forward Grace Coates pushed the Central College women’s soccer team past St. Mary’s University (Ind.) 1-0 Saturday afternoon.
Coates tallied her first goal of the season at the 3:35 mark. It was the first of her 11 shot attempts in the match. The Dutch (1-1-0) held the Belles (0-1-1) off the scoreboard, withstanding 11 shot attempts to maintain the shutout.
After getting their first win, the Dutch are off Sunday before continuing its weekend trip at Hope College (Mich.) Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. EDT.
Road Soccer Draw for Dutch Men
Another stellar performance by the Central College men’s soccer defense yielded a 1-1 tie at Augsburg University (Minn.) Saturday night.
Central (1-0-1) did not allow a goal during the run of play for the second consecutive match. The Auggies (1-0-1) only goal came on a penalty kick in the 27th minute. It did not take long for Central to answer, as Nathan Casas evened the game in the 34th minute. He received an assist from freshmen Alejo Marcon and Spencer Taylor. Augsburg fired off seven shots in each half, forcing John Foster to make four total saves, including three in the second half. He made his final save as time expired in the match.
The Dutch will remain in Minnesota for a 1 p.m. game at No. 15 St. Olaf College in Northfield on Monday.
Coe Edges Central in Women’s Tennis
Opening the American Rivers Conference season, the Central College women’s tennis team was trimmed 5-4 by Coe College Saturday afternoon.
The Dutch (1-1, 0-1 conference) and the Kohawks (1-0, 1-0 conference) split the six singles matches, but Coe took two out of three doubles matches to secure the team win.
Alex Griggs was a 7-5, 6-4 winner in the No. 2 singles slot, starting her season 2-0. Central’s No. 5 and 6 singles players, Alli Krieder and Ashlynn Brant also started the young season 2-0 with 6-2, 6-1 and 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 wins, respectively.
The only doubles point for the Dutch came from the No. 3 pairing of Madi Whalen and Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney who won 8-4.
Central travels to Lincoln, Nebraska to play Nebraska Wesleyan University next Friday at 4 p.m.
Central Men’s Golf Team Rallies in Kentucky Tourney
A second-round push moved the Central College men’s golf team up to eighth place after the first day of the 19-team Transylvania (Ky.) Fall Invitational Saturday.
Competing at the par-72 University Club of Kentucky, the Dutch shot 304-292—596 in the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tourney. The 292 was one of the top rounds of the day. Greensboro College (N.C.) leads with 289-286—575 followed by Rhodes College (Tenn.) at 292-293—585 and Kenyon College (Ohio) at 290-296—586.
Kyle Gabos shot 75-72—147 and is tied for 22nd in the medalist standings. John Catanzarite of Ohio Wesleyan University leads with 69-71—140. Jake Moffett shot 74-74—148 and is tied for 25th, as is Harold Dobernecker, who shot 77-71—148. Cole McGriff had 78-75—153 and Nathan Lendman had 78-86—164.
The tourney concludes with 18 holes Sunday.
