Dutch Draw Women’s Soccer Match in Holland

Making its second-ever trip to Michigan and first venture to Holland, the Central College women’s soccer team tied with Hope College (Mich.) 1-1 Monday afternoon.

Central (1-1-1) secured the road draw against Hope (1-0-1), a program that has won seven Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association titles since 2003 and made five NCAA Division III playoff appearances since 2014.

After an 18th minute goal by Hope, Central evened the match following an Abby Frey corner kick. The midfielder was credited with the goal initially but there might have been a deflection by a different Dutch player. Sheila Horstmann preserved the draw with 11 saves, including seven in the second half.

Central’s next match is back in Pella, hosting St. Catherine University (Minn.) on September 10th at 4 p.m.

Late Tally Downs Central Men’s Soccer

#15 ranked St. Olaf College (Minn.) scored the only goal of the match with less than three minutes left on the clock to snatch the 1-0 win against the Central College men’s soccer team Monday afternoon.

Central’s (1-0-1) defense withstood a barrage all night against the Oles (2-1-0), as none of the first 27 shots for St. Olaf were good for a goal before they were able to convert a header in the 87th minute. Central was outshot 28-4 in the contest, forcing only one save by the Oles keeper. John Foster had 11 saves as the Dutch goalkeeper.

Central travels to Grinnell College for a 1:30 p.m. match Saturday.

Central Moves Up in Football Rankings

The Central College football team inched up one spot in this week’s D3football.com top 25 rankings to #13.

The Dutch outscored St. Olaf College (Minn.) 44-13 to climb in the first regular-season poll. The American Football Coaches Association’s coaches’ rankings won’t launch until later in the season. American Rivers Conference foes Wartburg College and Coe College are among those also receiving votes.

Central plays host to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Saturday in a 1 p.m. game at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium.
