It was a strong Tuesday for the fall sports teams at Pella High School, as the Dutch volleyball team swept Newton 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-19), while the ranked cross country teams won both races at the Grinnell Invitational.

At their home gym, Pella was able to bounce back from a tough sweep at Norwalk, and while it was far from easy, the Dutch were able to control the service line — highlighted by seven aces from Freshman Katie Scheckel, who has emerged as a strong all-around player as the team figures out its rotations.

FULL POST-MATCH INTERVIEW WITH KATIE SCHECKEL:

Pella’s offense was led by 13 kills from Mia Warner and 12 from Jasmine Namminga, who also added four assisted blocks. The Dutch improve to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference, and are next in action Saturday at Southeast Polk.

In Grinnell, the #3 boys and #5 girls in green and white had a fairly quick competitive turnaround from their home invitational, but didn’t look worse for the short break from racing, winning both team races running away.

Chase Lauman dropped below the 16 minute mark, posting the 4th best 5K in school history (15:58.5) to earn the meet medal, and led the Dutch boys who had five runners in the top 15t (Canaan Dunham – 3rd, 16:12.5; Nathan Vander Waal – 5th, 16:31.8, Noah Schuknecht – 10th, 17:20.1; and Cooper Vande Voort – 13th, 17:35.7).

Raegan Snieder was the 2nd fastest girl in the field (20:08.9), closely followed by Marissa Ferebee (20:11.8) in 3rd and Autumn Blink in 4th (20:14.8). Lizzie Neumann (9th, 20:55.9) and Jacie Trine (16th, 21:51.9) rounded out the team scoring for Pella’s girls. Click here for full results.
