The Knoxville Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 12:36 a.m. today in the 100 block of Laura Lane.

Crews arrived to find light smoke coming from the residence. All occupants were outside. Crews made entry into the residence to find a hoverboard had started on fire in one of the children’s bedrooms and spread to the carpet, bed and bedding.

The fire was extinguished and crews ventilated the residence and checked the remainder of the home.

Red Cross was contacted by Marion County EMA to provide lodging for the family.

Chief Cal Wyman tells KNIA/KRLS News there is a growing trend across the country with fires being caused by lithium-ion batteries found in hoverboards and scooters. He encourages people to please use caution when charging or using these items and that it’s important to have working smoke detectors in your home.

The Knoxville Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Knoxville Police Department and Marion County EMA.
