Central Powers Past Illinois College in Women’s Soccer
Another big offensive performance by the Central College women’s soccer team secured a 4-0 victory over Illinois College Sunday afternoon.
The Dutch (4-2-1) finished off an unbeaten week, outscoring their opponents 12-0 in a trio of matches. All four Dutch goals came in the first period starting with Rachel Daniels and Grace Coates getting their second goals of the season. Daniels was assisted by Jadyn Jacobs and Coates scored unassisted. Paige Cahill continued her stellar week by finishing the third goal of the match off an assist from Taylor Jones. She had three goals and three assists on the week. Esther Hughes notched her first career goal, taking an assist from Sarah Piazza. Central’s third shutout of the week needed just one save from Sheila Horstmann in her 90 minutes of work. Senior center back Alyssa Knuth also went the full 90 minutes in front of her.
Central goes to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match.
Dobernecker Opens in Second for Central Men’s Golf Team
Central College’s Harold Dobernecker carded a 1-over-par 72 and is tied for second after the first round of the Frank Wrigglesworth-Blugold Invitational Sunday.
Competing at the par-71 Eau Claire Golf and Country Club, Dobernecker had three bogeys and two birdies to go with 13 pars. Central stands sixth in the 16-team tournament with 304. Cole McGriff, competing as Central’s No. 5 player, came through with a 75 while Kyle Gabos shot 76, Jacob Moffett had 81 and Lucas Wendel had 82. Playing as an at-large entrant, Blake Wynn shot 77.
The 36-hole tournament concludes today.
Central Women’s Golf Team Third in Illinois
Steady play by Thea Lunning produced a seventh-place individual finish as the Central College women’s golf team took third at the at the 15-team Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic Sunday.
Lunning shot 77-75—152 for the Dutch, who finished with 308-311—619 on the par-72 Ironwood Golf Course. Central’s first-round leader, Delaney Underwood slipped from a tie for second place to a share of 14th among 98 players at 75-82—157. She was tied with Lydia Grond, who shot 79-78—157 in her first varsity appearance, and Mackenzie Biggs, who shot 81-76—157. Madison Clark tied for 34th at 77-84—161. It’s a 35-shot improvement from last year’s effort on the same course when Central finished 12th of 20 teams with 325-329—654. Playing as at-large entries, Peyton Bytnar shot 83-86—169 and Rachel Sohn had 90-86—176.
Central’s last fall season outing before the Oct. 8-10 American Rivers Championships is the Nebraska Wesleyan Fall Invitational at the par-72 Mahoney Golf Course in Lincoln, Nebraska next Saturday and Sunday. The Dutch won the five-team tournament last year with 322-324—646.
