Breelie Mauro’s first-place finish in cross country and Grace Dehmer’s 500th career volleyball dig highlighted a successful Tuesday for Norwalk Community athletics.

The Warrior cross country teams both placed second on a hot afternoon at the Steve McDermott Newton Cardinal Invite at Maytag Park. Then on Tuesday night, the Warrior volleyball team improved to 4-0 in the Little Hawkeye Conference with a 3-0 sweep of Grinnell.

Mauro, a senior, paced a field of 44 girls at Newton, earning her first individual title of the season with a time of 22:25. Teammate Brooke Seeley finished 17th in 25:38 while Sara Beckwith, Maya Butler and Audrey Warren finished in a tight pack between 21st and 23rd. The Warrior girls posted a team score of 81, placing second to North Polk.

The Norwalk boys did not run their varsity squad but still placed second to North Polk with a score of 68. Ethan Franklin finished seventh in 18:54, Corbin Oswald was ninth in 19:12 and AJ Mosqueda, Nathan Stocker and Don Agisha also placed in the top 20.

On the volleyball court, Dehmer’s 15 digs moved her past the 500 mark for her career as Norwalk handled Grinnell 25-19, 25-20, 25-17. The host Warriors improved to 11-5 overall and 4-0 in league play while the Tigers dropped to 6-13 and 0-3, respectively.

Norwalk served 12 aces in the 3-0 sweep, led by Noelle Sutcliffe’s 22-for-22, six-ace performance. Sutcliffe also spiked seven kills on the night, Sami Aagard had seven kills and five blocks and Ava Johnson added six kills on six swings.

Head coach John Fulton was impressed by how the Warriors adjusted to running a 6-2 offense for the first time this season. Kelsey Dammeier set a team-high 10 assists while Liz Iverson had eight.
