Playing through the rain and tough field conditions Friday night, the PCM football team snuck past Albia with a 16-7 victory heard live on the KRLS3 stream.

The elements loomed large early in the game, as the first three drives ended in turnovers. Gavin Fenton intercepted the Albia quarterback on the opening drive of the game, only for the Mustangs to fumble the handoff exchange on their first offensive snap and give the ball back to the Blue Demons. Albia again turned the ball over on the ensuing punt, as the snap sailed over the punter’s head resulting in him kicking the ball out of the back of the endzone for a safety to give PCM a 2-0 lead with 8:30 left in the first quarter.

That score held until the opening minute of the second quarter, when the Albia quarterback found a lane and scored a 15-yard touchdown to put the Blue Demons up 7-2. It took seven minutes of game action before the Mustangs responded with a William Vanderpool one-yard touchdown run that gave them a 9-7 lead they carried into halftime.

PCM got the ball to start the second half and opened the third quarter with a nearly five-minute drive that ended in a Gavin Van Gorp 27-yard touchdown pass to August Stock to give the Mustangs a 16-7 advantage. The defenses would prevail from that point on, as both teams were held scoreless for the final 19 minutes of the game.

PCM improved their record to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in district play ahead of a big road matchup with the only unbeaten team remaining in Class 2A District 7, #5 ranked West Marshall.
