Backup quarterback Cooper Downs tied an NCAA record with five third-quarter touchdown passes as the Central College football team pulled away for a 58-0 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan Saturday in Lincoln in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The Dutch rotated two quarterbacks in the first half as they built a 17-0 lead. Freshman Keegan Glover ran the zone-read for over 100 yards rushing and two scores, while starter Brady Ketchum struggled and was pulled after a second quarter interception.

Enter Downs, a sophomore transfer who spent last season at St. John’s and saw limited action in Central’s season opener against St. Olaf. On Saturday, he completed 12-of-17 passes for 174 yards in his record setting third quarter with touchdown passes to five different receivers.

All told, the Dutch racked up 644 yards of offense to just 178 for the Prairie Wolves. Central’s defense forced three turnovers and stifled NWU into 2-of-18 on third downs. It’s the first shutout since a 33-0 win over Buena Vista in 2016.

The Dutch are 3-1 and 1-1 in the American Rivers Conference. They’ll host Wartburg for a top-25 matchup next Saturday for homecoming at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium.
