The Pella Christian volleyball team was able to extend their winning streak to 12 matches before dropping the championship game against Stanton Saturday at the Greene County Tournament.
Riding the recent wave of momentum around the program, the Eagles soared into the championship match in Jefferson with a 2-0 sweep of Boone and 2-1 wins over Carroll, Greene County, and Carlisle. In the championship, Pella Christian fell just short of the second Saturday tournament title in three weeks with a 16-21, 12-21 loss against Stanton. With their four wins, the Eagles are just one more victory from matching their win total from last season. While the Eagles have exceeded expectations this fall, head coach Tammi Wight believes that her squad can maintain their great play by focusing on what they’re doing match in and match out.
“The great thing about winning when you’re not expected to or being in the top half when you’re not expected to, is honestly my girls don’t really know. We’re just gonna go out and play the way we can, and we’ll focus on that instead of what people see us as because we just don’t know. We’ve not really been in that position before and none of them have and so we’ll just go play and we’re gonna battle every ball and battle every point whoever’s on the other side. And if we do that, the wins will take care of themselves, and we’ll see what happens.”
Pella Christian’s record is now 18-9 overall, and they will look to make it 19-9 Monday night against Pella.
Meanwhile, the Pella volleyball team is seeking a bounce back from a road loss to Grinnell last week and want to keep a long streak intact vs. their long-time rivals. The Dutch are 20-4 in the Varsity Bound era against the Eagles and have won 13 in a row in the series dating back to the 2015 season.
The Pella vs. Pella Christian volleyball showdown begins at 7:15 this evening at Pella High School.
