Slow Start for Central in Own Men’s Golf Tourney

An uncharacteristic slow start put the Central College men’s golf team in a difficult position after the opening round of the 36-hole Central Fall Classic Monday.

The Dutch stand seventh in a 13-team field with 334 at the par-72 Finkbine Golf Course. Nebraska Wesleyan University bolted out of the blocks with 302 and holds a 13-shot lead over St. Ambrose University. Lucas Wendel shot 77, Cole McGriff had 80, Harold Dobernecker and Jake Moffett each shot 83 and Kyle Gabos had 85.

Smith, Daniels Named to All-Tournament Team at Millikin

Senior setter Amanda Smith and junior outside hitter Gracie Daniels were named to the all-tournament team from the Millikin Invitational Monday afternoon.

Smith averaged 22 assists in three matches over the weekend, notching a season-high 36 in a four-set win over Eureka College (Ill.) Saturday. She had double-doubles against Eureka (36 assists, 10 digs) and Millikin University (Ill.) (11 assists, 14 digs). Daniels piled up 27 kills, including a new career-best total of 13 in a sweep of Fontbonne University (Mo.) on Friday night. Her three-match total hitting percentage was .224 (27-10-76).

Central hosts Wartburg College for a big American Rivers Conference match on Friday night at 6 p.m.

Central Steady in Football Rankings

Staying in both Division III polls, the Central College football team set up a ranked matchup for Homecoming after a 58-0 win over Nebraska Wesleyan University.

The Dutch (3-1) stayed #24 in the American Football Coaches Association Division III Coaches’ Poll and dropped to #24 in the D3football.com Top 25. Wartburg College (5-0) is #20 in both rankings. North Central College (Ill.) remains #1 and Mount Union (Ohio) remains #2 in both polls. The only teams in the top-25 to lose were the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse and Wheaton College (Ill.), who both lost to teams ranked higher than them.

Central hosts Wartburg Saturday in Pella for Homecoming at 1 p.m. at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium.
