Central’s Grond, Foster Receive League Honors

Central College women’s golfer Lydia Grond is the American Rivers Conference female athlete of the week, and Dutch goalkeeper John Foster is the conference men’s soccer defensive player of the week.

Grond, who has spent most of her collegiate career on the Dutch junior varsity, was at the No. 5 position of the varsity lineup at the three-day, 54-hole American Rivers tournament that concluded Monday. She captured conference medalist honors, posting career-best scores in the first two rounds. She posted round scores of 78-74-80 for a three-day total of 232 at the par-71 Ames Golf & Country Club. Central’s Tabitha Schumacher was also named the conference coach of the year.

Foster posted two shutouts as the Central men’s soccer team scored a road draw at Wartburg College last Wednesday and blanked Coe College in Pella Saturday. He faced a combined 23 shots in the two games, recording eight saves. Foster has twice received honorable mention on the all-conference team.

Another Improvement for Dutch Women in National Soccer Poll

The Central College women’s soccer team added seven more votes to its total in the sixth week of the D3soccer.com top-25 poll released Tuesday. Central (7-3-2) received 22 total votes with six teams closer to cracking the top-25 poll. Central was defeated on the road at No. 12 Wartburg by a 4-1 margin last Wednesday. The Dutch rebounded with a record-tying 11-0 win against Coe College at home Saturday. Central also secured a 1-1 road draw at Hope College (Mich.) on September 5, who is also receiving votes.
