The PCM Mustangs beat the Roland-Story Norsemen 28-13 in the final game of the regular season. The victory enables the Mustangs to get a first round home playoff game next week in the Class 2A playoffs. The home win over the Norse also guarantees PCM a winning season as they moved to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in 2A District 7 play, good for second place in the district.
The Norsemen fell to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in Class 2A District 7 action.
It proved to be a big night by PCM’s August Stock, who scored three touchdowns on short dives into the endzone, Stock opened the scoring with a 1-yard dive with 7:50 left in the first quarter following the PAT kick by Dominic Witt, who was 4-of-4 on PAT kicks,
Roland-Story fumbled the kickoff and the Mustangs recovered at the Norseman 14. A few plays later, Stock was back in the endzone on a short 5-yard run to paydirt. To raise the lead to 14-0 with 6:33 left in the opening stanza.
Just as the Mustangs started to feel good, a huge kick return set up a 6-yard touchdown strike by Luke Patton to close the gap to 14-7 with 4:32 left in an explosive first quarter.
Neither team would score in quarter number two. Both teams turned the ball over twice in the first half. One of the fumbles lost by PCM took place at the goal line with the Norsemen recovering for a touchback.
The teams went to intermission with the Mustangs protecting a slim 14-7 advantage.
PCM received the second half kickoff and drove 51 yards with the drive capped off on a 1-yard Stock score for his third score of the game for a 21-7 advantage with 7:47 to play in the third.
Again another huge kick return put the tally at 21-13 with 7:33 left following the 89-yard kick return by Jonovan Wilkinson. The PAT kick was blocked by PCM. Nickelson made the final 28-13 with a one-yard plunge on the first play of the fourth quarter. PCM ran off seven minutes off the clock at the end of the game with some strong powerful runs.
There was plenty of praise to go around from head Mustang coach Greg Bonnett on both sides of the line. The game was heard live on the KRLS3 stream.
