It won’t win any beauty contests, but the Central College football team returned from its trip to Storm Lake with a 52-27 victory over Buena Vista Saturday in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The Dutch were in front 14-0 less than five minutes into the game on a pair of short touchdown runs by Cooper Downs and Keegan Glover, sandwiched around a Reece Miller interception, but the Beavers took advantage of several Central penalties and a breakdown in coverage, battling back to a 14-14 tie at the end of the first quarter.

Central pulled away again with a 24-point second quarter, including two more Glover TDs, to go up 38-14 at halftime. Buena Vista clawed back again, capitalizing on a muffed punt by the Dutch, cutting the deficit to 38-27 with the football early in the fourth quarter before the Dutch came up with the dagger, a 56-yard pick six by Miller, his third interception of the game.

Later in the fourth, Central added the final tally on Jeff Herbers’ second touchdown of the afternoon.

The Dutch improve to 4-2 on the season and are now 2-2 in American Rivers Conference play. They’ll host Simpson next Saturday afternoon at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium.
