The Indianola football team battled the Saints of Cedar Rapids Xavier in addition to a downpour Friday night on the road in the class 4A quarterfinal round, and came up short to end their season 23-6 as heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Saints struck first on their opening drive to take a 7-0 lead, and after the Indians had a high snap on a punt net them -26 yards and set up a short field, the Saints hit a field goal to go up 10-0 early. The Indians recovered however, and their defense held the rest of the first half as Matt Edgington found the endzone for the lone Indianola score with just seconds left in the first half as the Indians went into the break down 10-6.
The Indians held on throughout the third quarter, only giving up another field goal and trailed 13-6 with the ball near midfield, but back-to-back interceptions and long touchdown drives for the Saints sealed their victory. Head coach Eric Kluver tells KNIA Sports the squad fought really hard to get to this point, and while losing doesn’t feel good the guys can feel proud of what they’ve accomplished.
“We feel real good and we feel awfully proud of where our program has come and where we are at right now. Five straight playoff appearances in the 16-team format, and a pair of quarterfinals, we are just right there.”
The Indians end their season with a record of 7-4, and back-to-back finishes in the class 4A quarterfinals.
