Central College kicker Logan Sunvold (junior, Monroe, Southeast Polk HS) and linebacker Brody Klein (junior, Rainier, Wash.) received American Rivers Conference football honors for their performance in a 61-13 victory over Luther College Saturday at Pella.
Sunvold was tabbed as the special teams player of the week, going 7-of-7 on extra points and booting a 32-yard field goal on Saturday. He also recorded three touchbacks, averaging 61.2 yards on kickoffs. Sunvold ranks 13th in the NCAA Division III in season field goal percentage at .800 (8-10) and is 25th in field goals per game with 0.89. He’s connected on 51 of 52 extra point conversion tries and is Central’s leading scorer with 75 points in nine games. It’s the second time this year and the fifth time overall that Sunvold has received the honor. He was previously cited Oct. 24 and was a first-team all-conference selection last year.
Klein is the defensive player of the week after delivering a pair of big plays Saturday. He snagged a deflected pass for an interception and raced 45 yards for a touchdown. He also blocked an extra point try that defensive back Dillon Hoit (senior, Solon) scooped up and ran 90 yards for a two-point conversion. He posted four tackles, including three solos with 1.0 tackles for loss and one quarterback hurry. For the season he has made 51.0 tackles with 7.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 pass sacks, two interceptions and four quarterback hurries. Klein received all-conference honorable mention last year.
Central (6-3 overall, 4-3 conference) closes the regular season Saturday at the University of Dubuque in a 1 p.m. game.
