According to the City of Pella and Pella Historical Society, their tulip bulbs are fully in the ground in preparation for blooming next spring.
City of Pella Parks Director Chandler Nunnikhoven says various factors delayed the shipment from the Netherlands, and it was a race to get 130,000 bulbs in the ground by the time colder weather arrived — which was made possible by several volunteers and the parks department staff.
Executive Director of Pella Historical Society and Museums Valerie Van Kooten says they were able to finish planting their 100,000 tulips late last week at the Historical Village and Scholte Gardens.
Typically, tulips bloom in Pella starting in late March and continuing through mid-May, depending on the variety and weather patterns in the spring — with the peak usually occurring sometime in late April through the Tulip Time festival on the first full weekend in May.
