A career-best six 3-pointers for guard Samantha Scott (Davenport, North Scott HS) and a double-double by center Allison Van Gorp (sophomore, Pella, Pella Christian HS) in her season debut fueled an encouraging 78-70 Central College women’s basketball victory Saturday over Principia College (Ill.). It’s the season’s first road win for the Dutch (3-4).

With a game-high 18 points, Scott was among four players in double figures. Freshman point guard Jasmyn Williams (Denver, Colo., Arvada West HS) had 13 points and six steals. Van Gorp, who was sidelined by an off-season injury, gave the Dutch a big lift inside with 12 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth career double-double, while guard Abby Johnson (sophomore, Ankeny) added 10 points, six boards and two blocks. Guard Kelsea Hurley (senior, Mesa, Ariz., Desert Mountain HS) had seven rebounds and four assists and guard Hannah Dau (sophomore, Paullina, South O’Brien HS) had five rebounds and six assists.

The teams traded the first-half lead with Principia (3-2) up 33-28 with 3:38 left. But back-to-back threes by Scott sparked an 8-0 burst and the Dutch were up 38-35 at halftime as Central shot 57.9% in the second period. Principia held a brief 48-46 third-quarter advantage but an 8-0 run that included threes from Scott and Johnson put Central ahead to stay. The Dutch were outshot 38.2% to 37.1% but outrebounded the Panthers 50-43.

Central kicks off American Rivers play Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. with a women’s-men’s doubleheader at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Prairie Wolves were 3-2 heading into a Saturday non-conference game with Sarah Lawrence College (N.Y.) at the Colorado College Classic.
