The PCM boys wrestling team travel to Winterset Thursday night and went 1-1, defeating Perry 48-27 but falling to the hosts 56-12.

Against Perry, the Mustangs won eight of the 14 matches, all coming via fall. The wins came from Zach Richars at 126 lbs., Remington Fry at 138 lbs., Hewitt Brinegar at 145 lbs., Jeffrey McDaniel at 152 lbs., William Vanderpool at 170 lbs., Donovan Nickelson at 182 lbs., and Kaden Clark at 285 lbs. Nickelson and Clark were the lone winners against Winterset, with Nickelson taking his match with a 10-6 decision and Clark winning via fall.

PCM wrestling team next competes at the Dallas-Center Grimes Invitational on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The PCM boys and girls basketball teams begin Heart of Iowa Conference play tonight as they host Nevada.

Kicking off the doubleheader, the Mustangs’ girls squad will be looking to get their record back over .500. PCM opened the season with a 41-32 win over Chariton but fell to 1-1 with a 57-51 setback against Knoxville. Meanwhile, Nevada is looking for their first win on the young season. The Cubs dropped their season opener against Boone 51-37 and then fell to Carlisle on Tuesday 50-31. In addition to trying to get above .500, PCM is hoping to snap a 4-game losing streak to Nevada. Overall in the Varsity Bound era, the Cubs lead the all-time series over the Mustangs 21-6. 

In the boys game, both PCM and Nevada enter the contest with aspirations of getting to 2-0 on the season. The Mustangs, who returned just 19% of their scoring from last season, started the season with a commanding 70-52 win over Knoxville. The Cubs also dominated their season opener with a 63-36 win over Carlisle. Dating back to 2009, PCM holds a 14-11 advantage in matchup, but Nevada has won the last five games between the two schools.

Tonight’s basketball doubleheader between the Mustangs and Cubs at PCM High School begins with the girls game at 5:45 p.m.
