The PCM basketball teams went on the road for the second night in a row Tuesday, this time to Saydel for a Heart of Iowa Conference doubleheader, and the girls team dominated in a 46-26 victory while the boys fell in overtime 64-59.
The Mustangs girls’ defense was the catalyst in their second victory in consecutive nights. PCM held the Eagles to just 16.7% shooting from the field and just 8.3% shooting from three-point range, while forcing 23 turnovers. Offensively, the Mustangs found their rhythm in the second half, as they score 29 of their 46 points after halftime. Senior Madie Reed led a balanced PCM offensive attack with 12 points, while sophomore Addison Steenhoek added 11. With the win, the Mustangs’ girls team improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play on the season.
The PCM boys needed an extra quarter of basketball to determine the outcome of their game Tuesday. Saydel held the advantage early, leading by 11 after the first quarter and maintaining a nine-point lead at halftime. The Mustangs cut the deficit to six by the end of the third quarter, and then outscored the Eagles 15-9 in the fourth to send the game to overtime. PCM got a layup on the opening possession of overtime 25 seconds in but got outscored 7-0 the rest of the way as they fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Senior Grant Van Veen poured in a team high 20 points in the loss, while Gavin Van Gorp had 18 points.
The PCM basketball teams will get a day of rest today, before hitting the road for the third time this week for a conference doubleheader at Greene County.
