For the second basketball doubleheader in a row, the Pella basketball teams nabbed a pair of road victories, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS as the Dutch trekked east to Washington.
The opener favored the green and white 51-41, while the nightcap was a runaway 77-50 win for the boys over the Demons Tuesday night.
For the girls game, the Dutch ended the 1st quarter on a 14-2 run to take a commanding lead they stretched to 16 at one point, although uneven offensive play in the second half pushed the Dutch into an increasingly closer contest by late in the 4th quarter.
Sisters Abby and Mia Warner were the top performers for Pella girls, with Abby scoring 13 points and Mia tallying 10. The senior Warner says despite the uneven second half, she’s happy to see how the team has endured some early challenges on the road. Hear from Mia on this week’s KNIA/KRLS Radio Sports Page, that airs every Wednesday at 6 p.m. and Thursday at 10 a.m. on 92.1 KRLS.
In the nightcap, the Dutch boys came flying out of the gates with a 14-0 stretch over the first six minutes, fueled by a dozen three-point shots made in the first two quarters. While the Demons pulled the game from a 27 point margin back down to 16, the Dutch pulled away again in the 4th quarter. Senior Luke Keitges has been excited with the early season signs for this largely inexperienced Dutch team.
Full interview with Keitges:
Keitges scored 17 points, and Romon Hugan added 18 points with five more steals; Luke Hardman tallied 15 points as well.
The Dutch girls improve to 3-1 overall and the boys are now 2-1 — both return home Friday to host Grinnell in Little Hawkeye Conference action.
