The Norwalk and Pella Christian basketball teams met on Eagle Lane Friday night for a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS, and the Warriors cruised to the sweep with a 60-24 victory in the girls game and a 54-40 win in the boys game.
The Norwalk girls used relentless pressure on the defensive end of the floor to control the game. The Warriors held the Eagles to just 26.3% shooting from the field in the game and forced 20 turnovers. On the other end of the floor, Norwalk shot 43.8% from the floor en route to picking up the road win. Bailey Birmingham was the Warriors’ and game’s leading scorer with 25 points and Anna Larson added 11 points. Joslyn Terpstra and Anna Eveland were Pella Chrstian’s top scorers with eight points apiece.
In the nightcap of the doubleheader, Pella Christian and Norwalk traded the lead back and forth throughout the first half with the Warriors holding an 11-9 lead after the first quarter and a 27-21 lead at halftime. The second half was a much different story, as Norwalk outscored the Eagles 16-10 in the third quarter to bolster their lead to 12. The Warriors’ advantage grew to 20 halfway through the final quarter, before the Eagles cut the final deficit to 14. Norwalk had three players reach double figure scoring with Braeden Carlson leading the way with 20 points, and Redek Born and Aidan Harder adding 15 and 14 respectively. Lincoln Vander Molen was Pella Christian’s top scorer in in the contest with nine points.
The Norwalk girls improved to 1-3 overall on the season and 1-1 in conference play, while the boys improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the league. Both the Warriors’ basketball teams return to action on Tuesday with a tough home non-conference doubleheader against Lewis Central.
The Pella Christian girls dropped to 1-4 overall this winter and 0-2 in the conference, and the boys fell to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Eagles will get a week to rest before they return to the court on Friday with their first road conference doubleheader of the year at Grinnell.
