
The Van Meter Bulldogs swept the Pleasantville Trojans in West Central Activities Conference Basketball action Friday, December 9th.
The Trojans, playing at home, lost to the Van Meter girls’ 51-31. Pleasantville trailed 7-4 at the close of the first quarter and 23-15 at halftime. Van Meter put the game away in the fourth by outscoring the Trojans 19 to 6 in the final quarter.
Van Meter was led in scoring by Molly Birks with 13 points. Finley Netten added 12 points for the Bulldogs and Katie Vaught hit for 12.
The Trojans put one player in double digits as Hope DeMan tossed in 11 points. Next were Azell Smith with seven points and Joelle Johnson with six.
It was the first win of the year in five outings for Van Meter, while Pleasantville fell to 4-3 overall and to 1-2 in the league.
In the boys’ game Van Meter pulled out a hard fought 49-34 win over the Trojans. The Bulldogs, fresh off winning the football state title, moved to 3-0 overall with the victory. The Trojans slipped to 1-3 overall and to 0-3 in the conference.
Pleasantville stayed close throughout most of the game with some solid defense. The Trojans led 11-8 at the end of the opening quarter, after trailing 5-0 at the start of the night.
Van Meter went on a 12-3 run in the second quarter to take a 21-14 lead into the half. The Trojans couldn’t catch up as the Bulldogs were solid defensively.
Van Meter was led in scoring by Cael Trudo with 10 points and Gus Rosener with nine. Both players came off the bench as the Bulldogs showed off their depth on the court.
Parker Sheets topped the scoring for Coach Taylor Phipps’ PHS team with 16 points. Dyson Leerhoff was limited to nine points and Trent Jolly had six.
Both Trojan teams will be back in action this afternoon on the road against Lynnville-Sully,
