Highlighted by Maddux Borcherding-Johnson’s championship finish at 285 pounds, the Norwalk boys wrestlers placed eighth out of 14 teams in Saturday’s Frank Baltzley Invitational at Johnston.

Borcherding-Johnson, who is ranked 2nd in Iowa’s Class 3A, pinned his first two opponents in less than a minute before downing top-ranked Jake Walker of Waverly-Shell Rock, 5-2, in the heavyweight championship match. Borcherding-Johnson is now 9-0 on the season.

The Warriors finished the day with eight place-winners and scored 106 points. Tyler Harper placed second at 106, going 2-1 with two pins, and Donovan Card took fifth at 138. Southeast Polk won the team title with 218.5 points.

Also on Saturday, the Norwalk girls wrestling team finished 0-5 at the Ankeny Centennial Dual Tournament. The Warriors lost to Mason City 58-18, West Marshall 48-15, Ankeny 72-6, Indianola 48-12, and Pella 36-21. Katie Liedtke was Norwalk’s top performer on the day, notching three pins and a 5-4 win by decision. Isabel Evans and Kaylie Popiano added two pins each.

 BOWLING

The Norwalk bowling teams both lost dual meets at Oskaloosa’s Statesmen Lanes on Saturday. The girls lost a close decision of 1980-1907 while the boys lost 2904-2819.

Top two-game series scores for the Warrior girls included Elivia Stout with a 275, Julia Palen 264 and Kate Desmond 262. Ellery Racz had the high individual game with a 145. For the boys, Andrew Winfrey rolled a two-game set of 459, followed by Jaxson Swift’s 402 and Emerson Fels with a 358. Swift’s 253 marked the team’s high game.

Both Norwalk squads are now 2-2 on the season.
