While Pella Historical Society is closing the Historical Village for the season soon, their hibernation is far from a break.
Executive Director Valerie Van Kooten and Assistant Director Jessi Vos say the Windmill Winterim Program returns in January and February, with a wide range of programs and classes for members and the public to participate in. Registration is now open to the public.

Apple Pie Program

Beth Howard, otherwise known as Iowa’s “Pie Lady,” is an author, blogger, and radio commentator. She is also known for being the (former) resident of the American Gothic House, where from 2010 to 2014 she ran the Pitchfork Pie Stand. An author of several books, she has also written for the New York Times, Real Simple, Country Living, and many other publications. Beth has been featured on CNN, CBS This Morning, BBC, NPR, and more, and she has given a TEDx talk about the healing powers of pie.

Join Netherlands native Raymond Klok for “Dutch for Travelers!” No grammar, no workbooks, just handy words and phrases you can use for your trip abroad, or just for your own enjoyment. Each week will tackle another theme, including introductions, weather, food and ordering food in restaurants, medical help, etc. Students will go home each week with a list of the words and phrases learned. Depending on enrollment, we might be able to offer individual evenings for those who can’t do all 8.

Van Kooten Presents About Pella’s 175th Birthday, 175 Tulips Away Showing

In September a conference was held in Noordeloos, Netherlands, commemorating Pella’s 175th birthday. Executive Director Valerie Van Kooten attended and spoke at the event on “The Dutch in Pella Today.” Join her to hear what she learned about Pella’s founding, the people who founded it, and Scholte’s role in the undertaking. Following her talk, we will view the documentary 175 Tulips Away, created by Noah van Diepen and Lincy Wingelaar, our two Dutch
students who stayed in Pella last April.
