While the varsity basketball team has had its fair share of fun moments through the first eight games of the 2022-23 season, the Pella Girls Basketball team is receiving an even bigger boost as JV contests end.
Lucy Diers has been breaking barriers ever since she was adopted by Doug and Jen Diers in Pella more than a decade ago; a special-needs orphan from Sierra Leone, Africa, the Pella High School student is carrying on a family tradition of loving basketball in her own unique way. Diers has been making shots at the end of JV games — with a little help from both teams, and while doing so, is giving everyone in attendance a reminder about what sports can mean beyond the competition itself, according to Pella Head Coach Blaine Forsythe.
“She comes to every single practice and always has a smile as face,” he says. “Lucy is a special person and our girls do a great job of including her in the things that we do and being able to score in multiple games is pretty stinkin’ awesome.”
“We are super thankful for the Diers in allowing her to be a part of this team and there’s so many cool things about it.”
