At their first meeting of the new year, the Pella City Council will receive a presentation about the progress of developing plans for a new recreation facility in the community.

During policy and planning Tuesday, representatives with Shive-Hattery will provide an update. In July of 2022, Council approved an Architectural and Engineering Services Agreement with that firm, and since that time, Shive has been working with staff and the Council appointed ad-hoc committee to determine the design and facility components of the Indoor Recreation Center, which will be presented during this meeting.

Highlights of the proposed Indoor Recreation Center components include:
• 78,000 square foot facility
• Four full-size basketball gymnasiums
• Recreation swimming pool
• Competition swimming pool
• Indoor walking track
• Rock climbing wall

City staff reports the components of the facility can be scaled to match the available funding sources.

Shive-Hattery representatives are proposing to hold public input sessions during the week of January 9th. Prior to those meetings, city staff is seeking city council feedback.

The Pella City Council meeting begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Pella Public Safety Complex and can be viewed online.
