Nearly identical results have put the Pella High girls and boys basketball teams in identical situations after a sweep of Oskaloosa last night as heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
The girls opened with a 62-42 victory before the boys closed out the evening with a 62-44 win. They’re each 3-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference and tied for second place.
Both teams used big runs to blow open close games. The girls were tied at 21 before the Dutch finished the first half with a 12-0 spurt and the Indians never got closer than six the rest of the way. Hailey Van Vark scored 17, Kylie Tauke and Aaliyah Riddick chipped in 13 and 10, respectively, and Mia Warner grabbed 10 rebounds.
Pella’s boys trailed 26-21 in the waining moments of the first half before closing on a 9-0 run, then opening up the second half on another 9-0 run for an 18-0 stretch that built a double digit lead they would not relinquish. Luke Hardman scored 20 points, Romon Hugan scored 12, Luke Keitges added 11 and senior Cam Schulte snatched 11 rebounds.
“It started out slow in the first two quarters”, Schulte said, “but once we found out how to stop them on the defensive end, we held them to just five points in the third quarter and that helped us out a lot. It also transitioned into our offense, we found shooters and we were able to knock down some shots. It was a really good win tonight.”
Pella’s boys are 5-2 overall while the girls are 7-2. Up next for both clubs is a trip across town Friday night to Eagle Lane to battle Pella Christian.
