The PCM basketball teams traveled to Montezuma Thursday night for their first non-conference doubleheader of 2023, and the girls comeback attempt fell short 57-56 while the boys were defeated 80-52.
In their first action of the new year, the Mustangs girls found themselves down 36-26 at the intermission of the tough road contest. PCM responded in the third quarter, outscoring the Bravettes 17-8 in the period to pull within one. The Mustangs grabbed a three-point advantage at the midway point of the final quarter and held that advantage until the final minute of the game. Montezuma reclaimed the lead 57-56 in the final minute, and PCM couldn’t connect on the go-ahead basket as they fell to 5-6 overall on the season. Tori Lindsey had a career high 24 points in the loss, while Addison Steenhoek added 11.
The PCM boys dug themselves into an early hole against the Braves, falling behind 22-9 after the opening quarter. Montezuma pushed their lead to 39-19 at halftime, before further extending the advantage to 60-32 heading into the final period. Each team scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, as PCM dropped to 3-7 overall on the season.
