The Simpson College women’s basketball team extended its win streak to six games with a resounding 88-37 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan Wednesday, while the men’s basketball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end with a 80-69 loss to the Prairie Wolves.
The Storm women’s defense dominated from the opening tip, forcing the Prairie Wolves to turn the ball over in each of their first four possessions and 12 times in the first quarter alone. Simpson (8-7, 3-3 A-R-C) scored 17 points off those miscues and carried a 25-2 lead into the second quarter. The Storm would coast to the victory from there, leading by as many as 53 points on their home court. Sixteen players got into the scoring column for the Storm, led by the he trio of Macy Emgarten, Molly Lutmer and Elise Boulton with nine points each, while Cassie Nash and Anna Wanek combined for 16 and six other players contributed at least four points.
The story of the game for the Simpson men’s squad (11-3, 4-2 A-R-C) came down to rebounding and turnovers. Despite outshooting the Prairie Wolves (9-6, 4-2 A-R-C), the Storm were outrebounded 37-24, with the Prairie Wolves grabbing 14 on the offensive glass and were also forced into a season-high 16 turnovers in route to their first loss since November 30th. Easton Darling led Simpson offensively with 19 points, while Andrew Gibb recorded 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds and Buck Eagleburger added a career-high 12 points. Andrew Curran dished out 10 assists, becoming the first Storm player to record 10 assists in a game since Kyle Wagner had 11 against Greenville in November 2019.
The Simpson basketball teams close out a three-game home slate on Saturday with a conference doubleheader against the University of Dubuque that can be heard live on 94.3 KNIA. The doubleheader begins with the women’s game at 2 p.m., followed by the men’s game around 4 p.m.
