
The PCM boys wrestling team swept their Heart of Iowa Conference triangular at South Hamilton Thursday, while the boys basketball team fell in a non-conference game to Earlham.
The Mustangs wrestling team dominated the hosts in the opening dual, winning 81-3, before completing the sweep with a tough 42-35 victory over Greene County. Against South Hamilton, PCM won 14 of the 15 bouts, with 13 of those victories coming via fall. Nate Richards at 195 lbs. had the quickest pin versus the Hawks, needing just 31 seconds to claim the victory. Facing Greene County, the Mustangs managed to win eight of the 14 matches to finish off the sweep. Of PCM’s eight victories, only two came via fall. Donovan Nickelson pinned his 195 lbs. opponent in 1:09, while Richards wrestling at 220 lbs. against the Rams needed just 1:36 to improve to 2-0 on the night.

Back in Monroe, the Mustangs’ boys basketball team fell to Earlham 65-47. The two teams were locked in a stalemate after the first quarter, as the score was knotted up at 11-11. The Cardinals took control of the game before halftime, opening the second quarter on a 14-0 run to outscore PCM 22-6 in the frame and hold a 33-17 advantage at the break. Earlham pushed the lead to 49-28 by the end of the third quarter, and despite outscoring the Cardinals 19-16 in the final period, the Mustangs ultimately fell to 3-9 overall on the season. Grant Van Veen produced a big offensive game, scoring 27 points, while Jacob Wendt added 11.
