The American Legion Flag Essay Contest winners for the fifth grade in Knoxville were announced at a special ceremony Friday morning at Northstar Elementary. The top 10 students in the essay contest were announced before the entire fifth grade class.
The top 10 students recognized for their essays were Jace Carter, Avery Dittmer, Kayden Feldman, Braden Gomez, Jackson Kelley, Bella Landis, Alexander Richmond, Parker Ussery, Jaylee Weldon and Isabella Woodcock. The top two essays from Knoxville were by Parker Ussery and Isabella Woodcock. The top two also picked up a $20 bill.
Parker was considered the overall winner from Knoxville to represent Knoxville’s American Legion Baty Tucker Post 168.
Curt Froyen with the American Legion in Knoxville tells KNIA/KRLS News about the event, “In Knoxville we have five teachers who teach fifth grade and they do such a wonderful job of working with the children and working with the students, teaching them about the history of our flag and what the flag means to us. Each of the students wrote an essay about what the flag meant to them.”
The top 10 students in the contest each received a framed thank you letter from the post, uncirculated quarters representing Fort McHenry for the battle in 1814, and a 3×5 American Flag.
