The Pleasantville varsity girls knocked off the Wildcats of West Central Valley 60-56 in overtime in a West Central Activities Conference Basketball game at home Friday night.

Azell Smith hit a 3-point shot for the Trojans right before the final buzzer to tie the game 44-44 to force overtime. In the four-minute overtime session the Trojans never trailed, gaining a quick five-point lead 49-44 and never looked back in the 60-56 win. The win put the Trojans at 6-8 overall and 2-7 in the league.

The visitors slipped to 6-8 overall and 3-6 in the league.

Pleasantville’s season-long scoring leader Joelle Johnson fought foul trouble all night. She had five points at half but bounced back strong in the fourth quarter and overtime to finish with 26 points. Also hitting double digits for Jeff Cook’s team were Azell Smith with 10 and Hope DeMan with 12.

The PHS boys beat the Wildcats 62-45 as Dayson Leerhoff popped in a career high 42 points in the win. His previous high point total was 34.

The Trojans led 14-4 at the end of the first quarter and 28-14 at half. The Wildcats refused to fold as they cut the deficit in the third quarter to 42-35 before the Trojans raced away again to win by 17.

Pleasantville has won six games in a row as they now stand at 8-5 overall and 6-4 in the conference. WCV fell to 3-10 overall and to 0-7 in the league.

The Trojan teams will be back in action Tuesday, January 17 to face Van Meter in conference play. The girls game will tip at 6:15
