In a thriller that came as advertised in the second game, Waukee ultimately swept Indianola’s basketball teams Saturday in a non-conference twin bill heard live on the KNIA3 stream.

The ranked matchups went 52-36 in the girls contest in favor of the road team, and a top five showdown in Class 4A went down to the final seconds and in favor of the Warriors 60-57.

Despite missing star Drew Kingery for a fifth consecutive game, #5 in 4A Indianola showed why they belong in the discussion of Class 4A contenders with #3 Waukee, overcoming an early 12-point deficit in the 1st quarter to ultimately be up by halftime. The teams traded haymakers and big shots in the 3rd and 4th quarters, with a total of 20 ties or lead changes between the pair. Indianola had a four-point lead in the 4th — only for future Iowa State Cyclone Omaha Biliew to hit a rare four-point play opportunity. The home team again led late, with the ball and a two-point advantage with 1:30 left in the final quarter, but turned the ball over on back-to-back possessions. It was Waukee’s Cooper Randall hitting the game winning three with just under two seconds remaining.

Brayden Drea finished with 26 points in the thriller to lead both teams, and Biliew scored 12 of his 18 points in the final quarter to lead the comeback for the Warriors.

Indianola’s girls traded shots with Waukee in the opener, leading at one point by a 17-14 margin in the 2nd quarter. But Waukee would generate a 15-0 run with four three-point shots into the halftime break and never looked back. Emily Naughton ended up with 14 hard-earned points.

Indianola’s boys fall to 11-1 overall and the girls are now 6-7, and both are off until they head to Newton on Friday.
