Warren and Marion County legislators State Senator Julian Garrett and State Representative Brooke Boden held a meeting with constituents to discuss the School Voucher Program. Members of the public brought up their issues with the bill, with one of the arguments being that private schools receiving public money may not have to adhere to all of the rules that public schools are required to do, including accepting students of any religion, race, or disabilities.
Senator Garrett likened the bill to function similarly as a college tuition grant, stating that Simpson College is a private school but receives public funding for students to attend with a reduced tuition cost, among many other arguments on both sides.
The legislature held a public hearing on the School Voucher Program bill Tuesday evening, with hundreds speaking both for and against the bill. The proposed bill would use more than 340 million dollars annually for parents to send their children to private schools.
