The PCM boys wrestling team claimed second place in the Heart of Iowa Conference meet Friday night at Perry, while the basketball teams split their home league doubleheader versus Greene County.

The Mustangs wrestling squad compiled a team score of 222 points which was 37.5 shy of West Marshall, who took home the title. Donovan Nickelson was PCM’s lone wrestler to claim the top spot in the conference in their respective weight classes, winning the 182-pound division. Additionally, the Mustangs had eight runners-up finishers in the meet and three third place finishers.

The PCM girls basketball team improved to 3-0 on the week Friday, as they cruised to a 39-17 victory over Greene County. The Mustangs bolted out to an 13-4 lead after the first quarter, before extending their lead to 26-7 at the half. PCM cruised after the break to extend their winning streak to three games and improve to 8-9 overall and 5-5 in the conference. Tori Lindsay led the Mustangs offensively in the contest with 12 points and Paige Steenhoek added nine points.

Capping off the twinbill, the PCM boys dropped a tight contest with the Rams 54-51. Greene County held the advantage at the end of the first quarter 19-13, before the Mustangs tied the game at 24-24 at halftime. After edging the Rams 13-12 in the third quarter, PCM took a 37-36 lead into the final period, but the advantage wouldn’t last however, as Greene County came back to drop the Mustangs to 4-12 overall and 3-7 in league play. Grant Van Veen and Jacob Wendt each contributed 16 points for PCM in the loss, while Gavin Van Gorp added 11.

The PCM boys wrestling team has a quick turnaround, competing in the Ed Winger Invitational at Urbandale High School today at 9 a.m. The Mustangs’ basketball teams get a week off before returning to the court on Friday with a home conference doubleheader versus Perry.
