On an emotional night where survivors were honored and the fight against Cancer was the theme, the Knoxville Basketball Squads won two games. The girls took care of Chariton 48-37 and the boys rolled the Chargers 82–57 heard live on 95.3 KNIA. The girls held control for most of the game building a lead as high as 21 with styfulling defense that held the Chargers to 22 points through three quarters. While Chariton made a run to get the lead down to eight at one point, the Panthers were never threatened, posting the 11 point win. Coach Matt Ritchhart told KNIA/KRLS Sports they wanted to speed up Chariton and make the Chargers run to Knoxville’s speed.
Ritchhart: “We knew we wanted this game at a faster pace than it was in Chariton. Chariton does a great job of keeping it at their pace, and we wanted to contain Snook. We got the pace we wanted for about three quarters.”
Hannah Dunkin had 16 points to pace Knoxville and sister Emma scored 14. The boys left no doubt coming out firing on all cylinders. The Panthers jumped on top 23-10 after one quarter and upped it to 24 at the half, and pushed it to as high as 33. The Chargers had no answer for Landen Norris and his team high 17 points. Coach Troy Pearson was somewhat concerned about the energy his team would have after watching the honor ceremony.
Pearson: “I thought we had the right amount tonight, and defensively we had a good game play. We had a bit of a lull in the third quarter, I thought 25 of the 32 minutes was good basketball.”
Jay Kellar scored 15 points, while Noah Keefer and Carson Uitermarkt had 11 each for a balanced Knoxville. Knoxville girls are 11-4 and are now 8-3 in the South Central Conference while the boys are 10-3 and 10-1. Both Knoxvilles will head to Centerville on Tuesday. No official word on how much money was raised during Panthers vs. Cancer, the Knoxville Cancer Relay raised $23,400.
