The Norwalk boys basketball team defeated Ames on Saturday for its eighth consecutive win, the Norwalk girls also beat the Little Cyclones, and the Warrior bowling teams both finished second in a triangular.
Less than 24 hours after handing Class 4A fifth-ranked Indianola its first Little Hawkeye Conference loss of the season, the Norwalk boys basketball team snapped Ames’ nine-game winning streak with a 53-49 road win. The Warriors ran their own streak to eight games and improved to 12-3 overall.
Braeden Carlson led a balanced Norwalk scoring attack with 17 points. Redek Born, Jack Brown and Aidan Harder added 10 points each. The Warriors converted 12-of-13 free throws as a team.
The Norwalk girls also had a good day at Ames, building a 24-14 halftime lead, winning all four quarters and topping the Little Cyclones 45-30 to improve to 4-13 overall. Bailey Birmingham and Avery Thomas paced the Warriors with 19 and 14 points, respectively. Defensively, the team held Ames to 28 percent field goal shooting and forced 29 turnovers.
Both Norwalk squads return to action Tuesday night at Dallas Center-Grimes.
BOWLING RECAP
Also on Saturday, the Norwalk bowling teams both competed in a triangular at Keokuk County Bowl. Centerville won the girls meet with a score of 1975 total pins, followed by Norwalk with 1899 and Sigourney 1335. Sigourney-Keota was the boys winner by just 37 pins over Norwalk, 2597-2560, and Centerville scored a 2080.
Four sophomores paced the Warrior girls, led by Julia Palen’s two-game series of 301. Elivia Stout had a 292 series and the high game of 172, followed by Ellery Racz with a 251 and Della White’s 242.
The Warrior boys had five bowlers record a series of 300 or higher. Sophomore Andrew Winfrey tallied a 390 and senior Emerson Fels added a 386, both rolling a game in the low 200s. The individual scores also included a 323 by senior Tyler Peterson, a 315 by freshman Tanner Housley and a 304 from senior Jaxson Swift.
The Norwalk bowlers’ next meet is Saturday, February 4, when they host Gilbert at the Air Lanes Bowling Center in Des Moines.
